ME SEN: Sabato Pulls The Plug On Tom Allen
Red State July 21, 2008
Political analyst and election guru Larry Sabato had high hopes for Tom Allen. The Democratic Congressman from Maine is challenging incumbent Republican Susan Collins, and the news has been a little rough from the get-go. Nevertheless, it's taken a year or more of steady proof to finally show Sabato the light.Collins has led in fundraising every quarter since the race began, over a year ago. Polls have shown a consistent double-digit lead for Collins, including a recent poll that showed her ahead by 25 points.

Group Hits Allen On Support Of Card-Check Legislation
Jessica Alaimo Politicker ME June 12, 2008
This ad ran today in several daily newspapers
The Employee Freedom Action Committee has launched a campaign against U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.
Thursday a full page ad appeared in several daily newspapers slamming Allen for his support of the Employee Free Choice Act. The act is designed to make it easier for worker groups to unionize and has drawn fire from certain labor groups such as EFAC.
The bill's opponents refer to it as the "card-check" legislation.
Collins opposes the bill because of a provision that takes away secret ballots in the union process, and the committee drove home this point in their ad, which reads:
"Tom Allen won Tuesday's Democratic primary through a private ballot vote. Incredibly, he supports a federal law that will force Maine employees into labor unions by eliminating their right to the same private ballot vote."

Allen's MoveOn Tie
NRSC Press Office February 6, 2008
Democrat Tom Allen switches his vote and takes thousands two weeks later
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Last September, Tom Allen's campaign practically admitted he is proud to be associated with MoveOn.org and the candidate soon followed suit. What's more interesting, though, is just how closely tied to MoveOn.org Tom Allen is.
On September 26, 2007, Tom Allen was given an opportunity on the floor of the U.S. House to denounce MoveOn.org's despicable and outrageous slandering tactics employed against a four-star General.
At first, Tom Allen voted in support of the measure. (Congressional Record, H10919, 9/26/07)
But then, perhaps realizing the potential value of supporting MoveOn, Tom Allen switched his vote on the floor of the U.S. House and voted against the motion to denounce MoveOn. (Congressional Record, H10919, 9/26/07 ; RCV#910, 9/26/07)
About two weeks after Allen's vote switch -- MoveOn.org initiated an organized fundraising appeal on Allen's behalf.

Allen's Tax Flip-Flop
NRSC Press Office January 23, 2008
Democrat Tom Allen flip-flops on tax relief in election year
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Democrat Tom Allen is on the lookout for a political opportunity to try and jumpstart his flatlining Senate campaign and he apparently believes he's found it in the economic stimulus package Congressional leaders are exploring. This of course, despite the fact that Tom Allen has repeatedly voted against tax relief aimed at middle-income taxpayers.
According to the Bangor Daily News, "...Maine's congressional delegation [is] embracing targeted tax cuts and rebates for low- and middle-income taxpayers. U.S. 1st District Rep. Tom Allen, D-Maine, a member of the House Budget Committee, questioned Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke about those measures last week. 'Money going to those groups has a more stimulative effect than to other economic groups,' Allen said." (Bangor Daily News, 1/21/08)
That's funny, because Tom Allen's record shows that he hasn't always championed tax relief. The last time Congress passed an economic stimulus package aimed at boosting the struggling economy, Allen voted against it.

Welcome Back To Work Tom Allen!
Maine Republican Party Thursday, September 20, 2007
Where Was Tom? Tom Allen skips work to campaign and misses 19 more votes
Augusta, Maine - The U.S. House this week reconvened to consider issues important to our nation such as Terrorism Risk Insurance and affordable housing. But Maine's 1st Congressional district was lacking something important: representation in the U.S. House of Representatives. Tom Allen missed an additional 19 votes this week so he could spend more time campaigning, bringing his total of missed votes to 129.
Maine Republican Party Chairman Mark Ellis said, "We were relieved when Tom Allen returned to work today to learn that he is good health and we welcome him back. But to miss 19 consecutive votes in a row for fundraising and campaigning more than a year before the election is inexcusable. This shows that Congressman Allen cares more about being a candidate than he does about doing his job."
Chairman Ellis concluded, "The House of Representatives has only had votes on 9 of the last 45 days. Congressman Allen missed three of those days of voting completely. Couldn't he have scheduled his campaign events for the other 36 days? I think Mainers deserve to know the answer to the question, 'Where was Tom.'"
